Gerry Reid's Professional Development Tip

Making Time for Myself

by Steve Harris, Guest Contributor

I've been trying something new. Making Time for Myself.

I'm currently involved in a lot of new program development work in relation to a complete revamp of my company's new employee training program . . . I'm extremely busy, very focused, and working at an extremely fast pace for long hours. For the past two weeks . . . I've been making a forced effort to break away at lunch (I have worked through my lunch period for the past ten years . . . so a real attitude change for me) and go for a fast two mile walk (get's my blood pumping).

I find I can clear my head, reduce my stress, and actually come back and be more creatively efficient in the afternoon. My work output has doubled over the past two weeks, and I have more energy for when the work day's done, when REAL life begins.

I have never been one to do lunchtime exercise . . . but by making time for myself, I feel better about me, and can relate better with my peers. I'm even more productive at work (what a concept). I find I don't even hesitate now . . . every day I make time for a fast walk. You ought to try steppin' out . . . keeps the brain cells clean. - Steve.

Thank you, Steve!

[Personal footnote: For more than 10 years, I have known Steve Harris as a student, teacher, song-writer, businessman, client, tour guide, professional advisor and personal friend.

Steve is one of those rare people who is exactly who he is all the time. That may sound silly, but what I mean is that Steve doesn't change a single thing about his sincerity, caring or friendliness as the situation changes. Whether I'm drinking a beer with him and talking about music and personal dreams, or negotiating how my services can be used in his company, he remains the same: no facade, no games, just Steve. He's a colorful song-writer, family-man and competent technologist, all in one.

Steve's also a writer and philosopher, having been one of the first to contribute his thoughts regarding a professional development "Tip of the Week."
