Gerry Reid's Professional Development Tip

A Sure Way to Satisfy Others

What is the one thing you demand in others? Think about several specific situations - work, home, play, community - when you are interacting with others, what is it you need from them above all else? Be specific in your thinking. Get some clear thoughts in you mind.

Once you have decided the most important item or items, catagorize what it is you are asking for - is it an attitude, a skill of some kind, or a piece of knowledge? If it is a combination, which element is the main part? Knowledge? Skill? Attitude?

Please - Before reading further, send me a note with your response.

Please tell me the thing you demand, and how you categorized it (Attitude, Skill or Knowledge).

After you have sent your note, scroll down.

I have asked thousands of people in my audiences to do this exercise. More than 98% say they have chosen an attitude as the most important thing they want from others.

So what should you do with this information? It is simply this: To satisfy others needs, give them exactly what you demand in them. For you, it is specifically that characteristic you chose, above.

Success is not about what you know (knowledge) or about what you can do (skill), it is primarily about your attitude about your skill and knowledge and your attitude about others.

This simple philosophy of giving others good, positive and moral attitudes (what you demand in them) will make a profound difference in the success of your career and the happiness in your relationships with others.
